Thailand Halves Visa-Free Stays for 60 Countries

New Visa-Free Duration Implemented
Thailand's foreign ministry announced a reduction in visa-free stay durations for visitors from 60 countries. From 15 September 2026, eligible travellers will receive a 30-day visa-free period. This measure halves the previous allowance for these nations. Countries affected include Singapore, China, the United States, and 27 European Union member states.
The Thai foreign ministry's consular affairs department confirmed these details on Tuesday. This policy adjustment marks a significant shift in Thailand’s entry regulations for a wide range of international visitors.
Addressing Public Order Concerns
The change aims to curb criminal activities involving foreign nationals within the country. Thai officials have cited recent arrests related to drug offences, sex trafficking, and operating businesses without proper permits. These incidents prompted a review of the existing visa system.
Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stated in May that the plan combats individuals abusing the visa framework. Tourism remains crucial to Thailand’s economy, yet authorities prioritise national security and regulatory compliance.
Exceptions and Extension Options
While many countries face reduced visa-free periods, some nations will receive extended stays. Visitors from Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will now be granted 90-day visa-free entry. This represents an increase from their previous 60-day allowance. All tourists will retain the option to extend their initial stay once.
Such extensions remain at the discretion of an immigration officer. A government spokeswoman confirmed the Cabinet's approval of this measure in May.
Impact on Tourism Landscape
Under Thailand's previous tourism scheme, over 90 countries and territories could visit for up to 60 days without a visa. This included Europe’s 29-nation Schengen area, India, and several South American countries. Thailand is Southeast Asia's second most visited country, following Malaysia. The nation welcomed 20.9 million foreign tourists this year.
This figure represents a 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The new visa policy could influence future tourism trends and traveller planning.
