Vietnam Prepares Hue-Phong Nha Tourist Train Service
Vietnam is developing a new tourist train service between Hue and Phong Nha. This initiative aims to link prominent cultural heritage sites and natural attractions across the north-central region, integrating rail travel with broader tourism provisions.
Connecting Central Vietnam's Key Attractions
Vietnam plans to introduce a new tourist train service connecting the historic city of Hue with Phong Nha. This rail link seeks to enhance access to significant cultural and natural landmarks in the country’s north-central area. The route will allow travellers to visit a range of notable sites.
These include the Complex of Hue Monuments, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, and the Vinh Moc Tunnels. It will also serve Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, which is home to Son Doong, recognised as the world's largest cave. Officials envision this project as a comprehensive model, combining rail transport with accommodation and sightseeing services.
Project Feasibility and Vision
Representatives from the Vietnam Railways Corporation (VRC) and the Quang Tri provincial People's Committee recently convened to discuss the project. During this meeting, officials stated the initiative demonstrates high feasibility. They also confirmed its alignment with regional tourism development strategies.
Furthermore, the plan efficiently utilises Vietnam’s existing railway infrastructure. Participants proposed creating a distinct identity for the train itself. This design would draw inspiration from regional heritage. It would incorporate the golden-brown colours of Hue, the green landscapes of Phong Nha–Ke Bang, and symbols representing Quang Tri as a land of peace.
The train’s interior will also introduce passengers to the cultural heritage, historical sites, and scenic attractions along the route.
Enhancing Traveller Access and Appeal
To maximise the route's appeal, officials recommended several key actions. These include offering competitive ticket prices and developing diversified travel packages. Such packages would combine accommodation, sightseeing, and shuttle services. They also stressed the importance of convenient schedules and improving transport links from stations to tourist destinations.
Stronger promotional efforts are also considered crucial for the service’s success. Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri provincial People's Committee, Hoang Xuan Tan, stated the project supports the region’s tourism cooperation strategy. He added it will optimise railway infrastructure while promoting the value of cultural heritage, historical sites, and natural attractions. This, he noted, will create fresh momentum for local tourism development.
Future Development and Regional Impact
Hoang Xuan Tan urged relevant agencies to collaborate closely with the VRC. This cooperation aims to finalise the project and complete preparations for its planned launch. Tan also emphasised the need to improve transport infrastructure connecting railway stations with tourist attractions.
Developing signature tourism products, highlighting local culture, history, cuisine, and OCOP products, is also a priority. Strengthening partnerships with travel agencies and accommodation providers will further support the initiative. Additionally, accelerating digital transformation in management, ticketing, and promotion is essential.
The Hue–Phong Nha tourist train is expected to become a signature tourism product, enhancing the appeal and competitiveness of Quang Tri and the wider north-central region for travellers.
