Historical Links and Current Trade Volumes

Western Australia is strengthening its economic association with Singapore, a relationship that dates back centuries. Speaking at the Western Australia Tourism Investment and Trade Evening held at Raffles Hotel Singapore on Monday, July 20, 2026, Betty Yang, Western Australia’s investment and trade commissioner for ASEAN, noted that trade between the regions existed when Raffles Hotel was first built, involving exports like sandalwood and agri-food from Western Australia in exchange for spices, rice, and tea. Today, Singapore stands as Western Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, with two-way trade valued at approximately A$12 billion (US$7.8 billion), which represents about 35 per cent of Australia's total trade with Singapore, according to TTG Asia.

Visitor Numbers and Investment Flows

The economic connection between Western Australia and Singapore is supported by their geographical proximity, shared time zone, and direct air links. Furthermore, a significant Singaporean diaspora resides in Western Australia, comprising nearly 30 per cent of Australia’s Singaporean community. Western Australia recorded 1.1 million international visitors in the year ending March 2026, generating over A$3.3 billion in visitor spending. Singapore remains Western Australia’s second-largest international visitor market, contributing more than 126,000 visitors who travel for self-drive holidays and to visit friends and relatives. Singapore is also a major source of investment into both Australia and Western Australia.

Implications for Hospitality and Future Growth

Robust visitor demand has bolstered Western Australia’s accommodation sector, establishing it as a leading hotel market in Australia, with occupancy rates consistently between 80 and 95 per cent. To accommodate anticipated demand over the next decade, the state estimates a requirement for 3,000 to 3,500 new hotel rooms across Perth and regional destinations such as Margaret River, The Kimberley, and the Coral Coast. Industry figures like Natalie Goddard of Sea West and Alex Ng of Business Events Perth emphasised that such engagement events facilitate new connections and foster long-term business creation, aligning Singapore and ASEAN expertise with Western Australia’s growth ambitions.
