European Preferences in Asia Revealed

European travellers showed strong preference for key Asian destinations during the second quarter of 2026. Data from accommodation search platform Agoda demonstrates Thailand’s Koh Samui, Bangkok, and Indonesia’s Bali topped search rankings. These findings reflect booking patterns observed from April 1 to June 30 for stays between July 1 and August 31.

Koh Samui ranked third among European choices. Bangkok and Bali secured the first two positions. Japan's Tokyo followed at fourth place. Thailand’s Pattaya completed the top five destinations for European visitors.

Koh Samui's Enduring Appeal

Koh Samui, Thailand’s third largest island, continues to attract international visitors. It boasts a population exceeding 50,000 residents. The island is known for its white sand beaches, dense tropical forests, and numerous high-end resorts. Sacred Buddhist temples also draw cultural interest.

Readers of American magazine Travel+Leisure previously recognised Koh Samui as the world's “most beautiful island.” Despite its growing luxury tourism profile, the island maintains much of its original character. This includes extensive coconut groves, small beachfront bungalows, and traditional coastal villages. Its recent appearance in the acclaimed television series “The White Lotus” further elevated its global visibility.

Vietnam's Coastal Destinations Gain Traction

Vietnam’s coastal regions also demonstrated increasing popularity among European travellers. Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City remained the most-searched Vietnamese destinations for European visitors. This marks the second consecutive year for their sustained appeal.

The strong performance of Da Nang and the rising interest in Nha Trang underscore European travellers’ growing focus on Vietnam’s coastal offerings. Ho Chi Minh City continues to draw visitors seeking urban exploration, cultural immersion, and diverse culinary experiences.

Vu Ngoc Lam, Agoda’s country director for Vietnam, stated that the inclusion of Da Nang and Nha Trang among the top three Vietnamese destinations highlights the strength of the country’s coastal tourism. He added that Vietnam provides travellers with many ways to visit Asia, from cities and culture to beaches and island escapes.

Implications for Travel Industry

These Agoda insights offer valuable information for tourism operators and destination marketers. The data shows a consistent demand for established Asian hubs like Bangkok and Bali. It also reveals a growing diversification towards specific coastal areas in Thailand and Vietnam. Tourism boards in these regions can leverage such data to tailor promotional campaigns.

Operators may consider developing new travel products or refining existing ones to meet these specific European preferences. The prominence of destinations like Koh Samui, partly boosted by media exposure, suggests opportunities for strategic content partnerships. Monitoring these search trends will inform future investment in hospitality infrastructure and connectivity.
