Premium Travel Card Options

American Express has recently provided details on its premium credit card offerings designed for travellers who frequently fly with Delta Air Lines. The two primary cards under review are the American Express Platinum Card and the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card.

The Platinum Card carries an annual fee of US$895, while the Delta SkyMiles Reserve card has an annual fee of US$650.

These cards are positioned for different types of Delta passengers: the Platinum Card appeals to those seeking broad travel flexibility and extensive lounge access, whereas the Delta Reserve card is better suited for individuals whose travel is predominantly with Delta, especially those flying with companions.

Current Welcome Offers and Value

New cardmembers can access distinct welcome offers for both products. As of September 2026, the American Express Platinum Card offers up to 175,000 bonus points after spending US$12,000 on purchases within the first six months of membership. Financial valuations from The Points Guy in September 2026 assess this offer at up to US$3,500.

For the Delta SkyMiles Reserve card, new cardholders can earn two domestic round-trip Delta Comfort flight certificates and 50,000 bonus miles after spending US$10,000 on purchases in the initial six months. This particular offer concludes on 4 November. The Points Guy's September 2026 valuation places the 50,000 bonus miles at US$600.

Enhanced Travel and Lifestyle Credits

Beyond welcome bonuses, the American Express Platinum Card provides a range of statement credits that add significant value. These include up to US$600 in hotel statement credits annually, available for prepaid bookings of two nights or more through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection.

Cardholders can also receive up to US$400 in Resy dining credits for eligible US restaurants, up to US$300 for Lululemon purchases within the US, and up to US$200 in Uber Cash for US transactions each calendar year. Additionally, the card covers up to US$200 in airline fees and the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years. The authorized user fee for the Platinum Card is US$195, compared to US$175 for the Delta SkyMiles Reserve.

Implications for Asian Travellers

For frequent travellers based in Asia or those regularly flying to and from the region, these premium American Express cards present specific considerations. Asian business and leisure travellers often seek lounge access, which the Amex Platinum provides through its global network, including Centurion Lounges and Priority Pass, alongside Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta.

The flexible points earned with the Platinum Card can be transferred to various airline partners, offering greater utility for international routes from Asian hubs. While the Delta Reserve card's domestic flight certificates are less relevant for intercontinental travel, its companion certificate could be valuable for Asian residents making internal US trips.

The varied statement credits, particularly for hotels and dining, can also reduce costs for Asian travellers visiting the United States, especially in major cities with premium hotel and restaurant options.
