Hainan Launches International Social Media Push

Hainan Province's Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports initiated a global social media campaign this year. The initiative, named "Cool Hainan," promotes the island as a resort destination. It also highlights Hainan's status as a free trade port. The campaign aims to draw more international visitors to this tropical island.

This project was planned and implemented by the provincial department. The campaign theme, "China's Free Trade Port, World-Class Resort Island: Welcome to Cool Hainan," frames the island's appeal. It targets key inbound markets across Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and Russian-speaking regions. Content is distributed via multilingual accounts.

Languages include Russian, Thai, Indonesian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This broad outreach strategy aims to bring Hainan into the view of global travellers. The campaign seeks to enhance the island's international appeal. It also supports its development into a global tourism and consumption hub.

Diverse Content and Significant Audience Reach

The "Cool Hainan" campaign published 56 travel-themed content pieces for global audiences. These were distributed across various social media platforms. By late August 2026, total exposures exceeded 16 million. The content reached an audience of over 52 million followers. The campaign moved beyond traditional promotional methods.

It released seven themed series of tourism content. These featured practical travel guides and immersive on-site scenarios. Key branding labels included "Cool Hainan" and "Top Ten Hainan Tourism Icons." Content themes varied monthly throughout the year. January featured luxury getaways on the Sunshine Coast. February showcased Li and Miao ethnic Spring Festival customs.

March highlighted surfing and Wenchang aerospace study tours. April focused on water sports and wellness tourism. May promoted archaeological study tours and rainforest adventures. June covered rainforest self-driving tours and ethnic minority villages. July introduced "Ten Signature Marine Tourism Routes," with a single post achieving over 2.6 million impressions.

Practical Travel Information and Global Engagement

The campaign content presented diverse landscapes and activities. These included bays, rainforests, folk customs, health and wellness, and sports. Crucially, it also provided practical travel details. These covered visa-free policies for 86 countries. Information on temporary foreign driver's licence permits was included.

Details on shopping, duty-free benefits, and departure tax refunds for off-island travel were also shared. The campaign seamlessly integrated the island's natural scenery with local intangible cultural heritage. It also showcased modern tourism consumption business formats. Global social media users showed strong interest in travelling to Hainan.

Many comments sought specific information. Queries covered visa-free policies, dining, accommodation, sightseeing, and self-driving trips. Several users indicated they had added Hainan to their future travel plans. This public engagement demonstrates the campaign's effectiveness in generating specific traveller interest.

Strategic Objectives and Future Tourism Development

The Hainan Province's Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports aims to leverage this themed social media campaign. Its goal is to build an international image for the island as a resort destination. This enhances Hainan's appeal as an inbound tourism destination. It also supports Hainan's development into a global tourism and consumption centre.

An official from the department stated Hainan possesses unique tropical coastal tourism resources within China. The province plans to capitalise on the policy benefits and openness advantages of its Free Trade Port status. Hainan will continue to optimise its tourism service offerings for international visitors.

It will also foster a tourism consumption environment meeting international standards. This strategic focus aims to solidify Hainan's position as a prominent choice for international travellers seeking diverse tropical activities.
