Traveller Faces Persistent Billing Discrepancy

A traveller is currently embroiled in a three-month dispute with Hertz over an erroneous charge of $1,367.38 for a Jeep Compass they claim never to have rented in Seattle. The customer had initially rented a different sedan from Hertz and received the expected bill.

However, a second, unexpected invoice arrived for a Jeep Compass, with pickup times listed before their arrival in Seattle and a return date a week after their departure. This discrepancy has led the individual to make more than 35 phone calls in an effort to rectify the billing error, which began around July 2026.

Stalemate Between Rental Company and Bank

To support their claim, the customer provided extensive evidence, including flight tickets proving their location at the time of the alleged Jeep rental, photographs documenting their actual whereabouts, and records of the car they legitimately rented.

Despite this, the resolution process has become a protracted back-and-forth between Hertz and Chase, the customer's credit card provider. The customer states that whenever their bank contacts Hertz, the rental company insists the vehicle was rented and refuses a refund.

Conversely, when the customer directly calls Hertz, they are informed that the refund has already been processed and that Chase is merely holding the funds. This cycle of conflicting information has persisted for three months.

Confirmed Refund Remains Undelivered

Adding to the customer's frustration, Hertz customer relations sent an email on October 2, 2026, explicitly confirming that an adjustment of $1,367.38 was processed on September 29, 2026. This adjustment was intended to remove a "duplicate rental charge" that had been applied to the account in error.

Despite this official acknowledgment and confirmation, the refund has yet to be received by the customer. Even after uploading this email to their Chase dispute, the bank reportedly informed the customer that direct confirmation of the refund from Hertz was still required.

With a credit card payment deadline approaching, the customer faces the prospect of paying for a service they did not use.

Hertz's History of Billing Issues

This incident is not isolated, reflecting a pattern of billing discrepancies that have surfaced at Hertz previously.

Past instances include customers being charged for vehicles they never collected, incurring traffic fines before their rental pick-up, incorrect credit card charges for loyalty point redemptions, disputed toll fees, and even charges for petrol in an electric Tesla vehicle.

The rental giant faced a significant settlement in 2022, paying $168 million to resolve 364 claims related to false arrests of customers who had legitimately rented or returned vehicles.

While Hertz announced a partnership with Palantir in October 2022 to enhance fleet tracking and management, aiming to mitigate such issues, this latest case suggests that billing accuracy challenges persist.

Implications for Global Travellers, Including Asia

For global travellers, particularly those from Asia planning international car rentals, this case shows the necessity of meticulous documentation and persistent follow-up when disputes arise. The complexities of resolving billing errors across different time zones and legal frameworks can be substantial.

Asian travellers booking with international rental companies like Hertz should keep detailed records of all transactions, including pickup and return confirmations, fuel levels, and any vehicle condition reports.

For Asian travel agencies and operators, this situation highlights the importance of clear communication channels with global car rental partners and robust support mechanisms to assist clients navigating such administrative challenges effectively.
