Langkawi Launches China Engagement Drive

The Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) has initiated a focused campaign to attract travellers from China, combining a multi-city roadshow with a new social media presence. This initiative, part of the wider Tourism Malaysia Sales Mission to China, runs from October 12 to 19.

Its objective is to strengthen relationships with the Chinese travel trade and elevate awareness of Langkawi among potential visitors. The campaign represents a strategic effort by LADA to re-engage a crucial market for Malaysian tourism.

Roadshow Spans Four Major Chinese Cities

The ongoing roadshow covers four key cities in China: Beijing, Zhengzhou, Wuxi, and Jinan. This direct engagement allows LADA and its partners to interact with travel agencies and tour operators, fostering partnerships that are vital for increasing inbound tourism.

The events are designed to present Langkawi's diverse offerings directly to the Chinese travel industry, ensuring that operators are well-informed about the destination's attractions beyond its traditional image. Waffa Wahida Zainol, LADA's tourism manager, stated that China remains a significant market for Langkawi.

Xiaohongshu Account Broadens Island's Appeal

Complementing the physical roadshow, LADA launched its official "Naturally Langkawi" account on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu on October 12 in Beijing. This digital channel will feature the island's varied appeal, including its UNESCO Global Geopark heritage, beaches, wildlife, and local cultural experiences.

The content aims to support LADA's "Feel Again" campaign, which seeks to position Langkawi as more than just a sun-and-sea destination. The account will also provide practical travel information and stories from across the island, offering visual narratives to a wide audience.

Strategic Shift in Destination Marketing

The dual approach of direct engagement and digital storytelling shows a strategic shift in how Langkawi is marketing itself to Chinese travellers. By presenting a broader narrative of its cultural heritage and natural attractions, LADA aims to resonate with contemporary travel preferences that seek authentic and visually rich experiences.

The launch event in Beijing featured Samuel Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director-General of Tourism Malaysia; Waffa Wahida Zainol, Tourism Manager of LADA; and Angie Ng, President of the Malaysian Inbound Chinese Association, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this renewed focus on the Chinese market.
