Marriott International is preparing to launch a rewards programme for AI travel agents, a move that shows the hotel group's intent to maintain control over customer bookings. Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano revealed this plan in a Wall Street Journal interview, stating, “Stay tuned,” regarding the specifics of who would receive these rewards. For years, major hotel brands have used loyalty programmes to encourage direct bookings, competing with online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia and Booking.com. Marriott currently processes approximately 70% of its bookings through its own channels, a figure Capuano deems "disproportionate" but "not enough," as direct bookings represent a more cost-effective method of customer acquisition compared to the higher commissions paid to OTAs. The company aims to capture the full value of each customer's travel spend.

AI's Dual Threat to OTAs and Direct Booking Channels

Marriott views AI agents as a significant challenge, potentially impacting OTAs more severely than its own direct booking platforms. An AI agent, equipped with knowledge of a user’s preferences, loyalty status, and budget, could directly access Marriott’s rates without needing an intermediary like Expedia for comparisons. However, this also means AI could bypass Marriott’s proprietary booking layers. Marriott has initiated an early experiment, a limited US beta of ‘Ask Bonvoy,’ a natural language search tool exclusively for Marriott hotels. While described as an initial test, it demonstrates the company's exploration into AI-driven search. Marriott has also confirmed collaborations with Google’s AI travel products and OpenAI’s advertising pilot programmes. The core struggle involves AI companies seeking to own the trusted recommendation, while Marriott aims to control the booking, loyalty relationship, and guest data. Meanwhile, OTAs like Expedia and Booking.com focus on providing broad inventory, comparison tools, checkout services, and customer support. The ultimate influence, however, lies with the AI that will recommend hotels to guests, posing a threat even to review platforms like TripAdvisor, as large language models incorporate guest reviews into their suggestions.

OpenAI's Stance on Incentives and Trust in AI Recommendations

The economic model for AI-driven recommendations raises questions about trust and financial incentives. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in an interview with Tyler Cowen, stated that accepting payment to rank a less suitable hotel would be "catastrophic" for user trust. He drew a distinction between a neutral recommendation and a transaction fee, suggesting that if an AI provides the best recommendation and then takes a consistent transaction fee for the booking, that model could be acceptable. This contrasts with practices where some platforms might feature higher-margin hotels more prominently. A study revealed that 18 out of 23 AI models selected more expensive options over half the time when informed they were sponsored, suggesting that financial incentives can influence even machine-generated choices. Marriott's proposed "rewards for agents" could mean an AI facilitating a direct booking where a Bonvoy member links their account, securing loyalty points, elite status, and benefits. Marriott would then pay a commission to the AI for directing the business, effectively creating a new form of online travel agency. This model, however, presents an incentive problem and, as Altman observed, a trust issue, particularly as AI systems move towards handling more critical aspects of users' lives beyond travel decisions.

Implications for Global Hospitality and Asian Markets

The development of reward programmes for AI travel agents by Marriott shows a significant shift in the global hotel distribution landscape. This move will compel other major hotel groups and online travel agencies to reassess their strategies for customer acquisition and loyalty in the age of generative AI. The question of who services these AI-generated bookings also remains, as traditional OTAs have invested heavily in customer service infrastructure. For Asian markets, this trend carries particular weight. Regional hotel chains, such as Shangri-La Group or Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, will need to monitor how these AI-driven distribution models evolve and consider their own responses to maintain direct booking volumes and loyalty programme engagement. Asian online travel agencies, including Trip.com Group, will face increased competition from AI platforms that could bypass their inventory and comparison services. Travellers across Asia, increasingly reliant on digital tools for travel planning, may find their hotel choices and loyalty benefits influenced by these new AI reward structures. Industry stakeholders should observe how these programmes develop and whether they lead to a more fragmented or consolidated booking environment, particularly as AI adoption grows across diverse consumer demographics in the region.
