Strategic Expansion Across Southeast Asia

Pan Pacific Hotels Group, headquartered in Singapore, is advancing its significant expansion strategy across Southeast Asia, with ten new-build and major renovation projects slated for completion by 2027. These developments are set to enhance the group's presence in key markets including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

Notable additions include new luxury hotels planned for Bangkok and Phnom Penh. This investment reflects the group's confidence in the sustained recovery and growth potential of the region's travel sector.

Choe Peng Sum, CEO of Pan Pacific Hotels Group, indicated that these plans are proceeding despite current geopolitical complexities and increasing travel costs, focusing on the resilience of intra-regional tourism.

Regional Demand Rebounds in 2026

The hotel group has observed a significant resurgence in tourism demand within Southeast Asia during the second half of 2026. This positive trend follows a sharp downturn experienced in the second quarter of the year, which Pan Pacific attributed to the conflict involving the United States and Iran.

CEO Choe Peng Sum noted that the conflict specifically impacted travel from the Middle East to the group's properties in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and Bangkok. Despite this, occupancy and average room rates rebounded strongly in the third quarter of 2026, with the group anticipating this recovery to continue throughout the final three months of the year.

Choe told CNA’s Asia First on 15 October 2026 that this upswing positions the group to potentially meet its annual budget targets.

Focus on Affluent Short-Haul Travel

Pan Pacific's optimistic outlook is largely predicated on the increasing preference among affluent Asian travellers for shorter, regional trips that include premium experiences. This shift in consumer behaviour helps mitigate the impact of broader geopolitical tensions and rising operational costs.

The rebound in demand from both leisure and corporate segments within Asia demonstrates a market adapting to current travel conditions. The group's strategy to introduce new luxury properties aligns with this trend, aiming to capture a segment of travellers willing to spend on high-end accommodation and services closer to home.

This approach could serve as a model for other hospitality operators in the region looking to capitalise on evolving travel patterns.
