Singapore Ranked World's Noisiest Country

Singapore was recently designated the world's noisiest country in a global index compiled by travel agency Go2Africa. The “Noise-Free Nations Index” evaluated seven criteria to determine which countries offered the greatest respite from urban clamour.

These factors included population density, tourist numbers, rural land coverage, protected areas, motor vehicle density, the presence of airports, and railway networks. Singapore received a quiet score of 6.78 out of 10 points, a metric indicating its high noise levels relative to other nations assessed. This ranking provides a new perspective on urban environments and their impact on daily life and travel experiences.

Density and Limited Green Spaces Contribute to Noise

Several key factors contributed to Singapore's position at the top of the noise index. The city-state records a high population density, with 8,436 residents per square kilometre. Furthermore, the volume of tourists significantly amplifies this density, with 23,609 visitors recorded per square kilometre.

Singapore's physical geography also plays a role; rural land covers just 30% of its total territory, severely limiting areas where residents and visitors might find quiet retreat. This combination of concentrated human activity and restricted natural spaces makes identifying tranquil spots within the country particularly challenging, as noted by the index compilers.

Extensive Transport Infrastructure Adds to Urban Soundscape

Singapore's highly developed and extensive transport infrastructure further contributes to its overall noise profile. The country possesses one of the world's highest densities of motor vehicles, airports, and railway lines.

For instance, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which commenced operations in 1987, now spans over 170 stations across six major lines and transports more than three million passengers daily. Similarly, Changi Airport, a major regional hub, covers more than one million square metres across four terminals, an area equivalent to approximately 156 football fields. The constant movement and operations across these networks generate a significant level of ambient sound.

Global Context and Implications for Travel

Beyond Singapore, the Go2Africa index identified the Maldives as the world’s second-noisiest country, followed by Barbados. Conversely, Bhutan was named the world's quietest nation. Tourism remains a vital economic pillar for Singapore; in 2025, the country welcomed 16.9 million international visitors, representing a 2.3% increase from 2024.

These visits generated a record S$32.8 billion (US$25.83 billion) in tourism receipts for 2025. For travellers, this ranking provides objective data for planning trips, particularly for those prioritising quiet environments.
