Thailand's Chinese Tourist Outlook for 2026

Thailand anticipates 5.1 million Chinese tourist arrivals in 2026, marking a 14% increase from the 2025 figures, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The TAT attributes this projected growth to ongoing efforts to re-establish the country's attractiveness and expand airline seating capacity.

In the first six months of 2026, Thailand welcomed 2.6 million Chinese visitors, demonstrating an 18% rise compared to the same period last year. Siriges-a-nong Trirattanasongpol, TAT executive director for East Asia, stated that Thailand's perception among Chinese travellers has improved.

This enhancement follows high-profile visits by Their Majesties the King and Queen, alongside Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, which have contributed to the positive shift in sentiment.

Regional Chinese Travel Trends and Competition

A recent Dragon Trail International survey, which polled 310 Chinese travel trade professionals, identified Thailand as the destination demonstrating the most notable recovery this year. South Korea and Japan followed in this assessment. The survey also revealed that Chinese outbound travel appetite persisted, even in the face of increased travel costs.

However, this regional trend does not apply uniformly. Japan, for instance, received 2.06 million tourists from mainland China in the first half of 2026. This figure represents a significant 56.4% decline year-on-year, primarily attributed to political tensions, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Broader International Arrivals and Challenges

Despite the positive forecast for Chinese visitors, Thailand's overall international arrivals showed a slight contraction. The country, recognised as Southeast Asia's second most visited nation after Malaysia, welcomed 18.5 million international visitors in the first seven months of 2026. This total represents a 3.19% decline compared to the same period in 2025.

Nation Thailand reported that this downturn was influenced by safety concerns and reduced flight capacity from markets such as India. These factors underscore the varied performance across different source markets and the challenges Thailand faces in maintaining consistent growth across its entire tourism portfolio.

Implications for Thailand's Tourism Sector

The robust recovery in Chinese arrivals is crucial for Thailand's tourism sector, particularly as it seeks to meet broader visitor targets for 2026. The 14% increase in Chinese visitors projects a strong rebound for this key market, but the overall 3.19% decline in international arrivals for the first seven months of 2026 highlights the need for diversified strategies.

Thailand's tourism authorities must continue addressing safety perceptions and securing increased flight capacity from other significant markets, such as India, to prevent further overall contractions.

The contrasting performance with Japan also underscores regional competition for Chinese travellers, compelling Thailand to sustain its marketing efforts and service enhancements to remain a preferred destination.
