Visitor Numbers Show Slight Decline

Thailand recorded 19.7 million international visitors from 1 January to 15 August 2026, according to figures released by the country's Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This volume represents a 3.19% reduction compared to the 20.35 million arrivals registered during the corresponding period in 2025.

Despite this year-on-year decrease, the Ministry noted that the overall tourism outlook for the remainder of 2026 demonstrates clear signs of strengthening. The decline in foreign visitor numbers is also less pronounced than earlier projections had indicated, suggesting a more resilient sector than initially feared.

Asian Markets Dominate Visitor Inflow

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports identified China as Thailand's largest source market for the period, contributing 3.3 million visitors. Malaysia followed with 2.4 million arrivals, demonstrating robust regional travel. India ranked third, sending 1.4 million travellers to Thailand.

European and Eurasian markets also featured prominently, with Russia accounting for 1.1 million visitors. South Korea completed the top five source countries, with 729,367 individuals making the visit. These figures underscore the continued importance of intra-Asian travel for Thailand's inbound tourism sector.

Events and Seasonal Travel Bolster Prospects

Several factors are contributing to the more optimistic outlook for Thailand's tourism sector towards the end of 2026. The nation is set to host significant international gatherings, including the IMF-World Bank meetings, which draw a large contingent of business and official visitors.

Additionally, the Tomorrowland music festival is expected to attract a substantial number of international attendees. Falling airfares are also making travel to Thailand more accessible. The anticipated return of European and Middle Eastern travellers during the upcoming high season is further expected to boost arrival figures, providing a strong finish to the year.

Regional Standing and Future Watch

In 2025, Thailand was the second most visited country in Southeast Asia, welcoming 32.9 million tourists. This placed it behind Malaysia, which recorded 42.2 million arrivals that year. The current year's performance, though slightly down, suggests a recovery trajectory.

For travellers, the improved outlook could mean increased competition for popular flights and accommodation during the high season, particularly from European and Middle Eastern markets.
