TAT Positions Thailand Surf Therapy as New Luxury Healing Experience
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently concluded two international engagement programmes in Phuket and Phang-nga. These initiatives showcased "Thailand Surf Therapy" and reinforced the "Healing Is the New Luxury" communication strategy. International media and content creators participated, highlighting Thailand's wellness and coastal tourism offerings to a worldwide audience.

International Programmes Conclude
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) completed two international outreach programmes this August in Phuket and Phang-nga. These initiatives included the Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey and the Amazing Thailand x Insta360 creator itinerary. Both programmes engaged international media representatives and content creators from key markets.
Participants explored Thailand’s surf, wellness, nature, community, and cultural offerings. The activities also reinforced “Healing Is the New Luxury,” TAT’s international communication direction. This strategy focuses on meaningful travel that supports physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
The engagement builds upon the development of Thailand Surf Therapy under the Thailand Health Excellence 2026 framework. Through this, TAT and its partners apply international surf therapy knowledge and science-based wellness principles to Thailand’s tourism sector.
Surf Therapy Concept and Activities
Thailand Surf Therapy operates as a structured wellness activity, distinct from medical treatment. The concept integrates surfing, nature engagement, physical movement, mindfulness practices, and positive social interaction. It draws on knowledge shared by South Africa-based Waves for Change.
The Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey, held from 8–13 August, brought eight international media and key opinion leaders together. Representatives from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan joined Thai tourism and wellness partners. Participants included Tom Dickinson and Lauren Mackenzie from Australia, Andiana and Mike, and Chess Sayer from the United Kingdom.
Japanese representatives ri_asiajapan, Ame Ayumi, and Ken Yashiro also attended. In Khao Lak, Phang-nga, a recognised surf destination, participants received guided Thailand Surf Therapy at Memories Surf House. Sessions covered water safety, movement techniques, and progressive surf skills.
Diverse Itinerary and Content Creation
The wider itinerary connected surfing with broader wellness activities at Devasom Khao Lak and La Vita Sana. Participants engaged in forest bathing at Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park. Kayaking at the Little Amazon in Takua Pa offered another nature-based activity. Cultural visits included Takua Pa Old Town and Phuket Old Town.
Farm-to-table activities and dining at Michelin Guide-listed restaurants completed the culinary aspect. Content produced by participants during and after their visit included Instagram Stories, carousel posts, Reels, and TikTok videos. This content aims to increase international visibility for Thailand’s surf and wellness activities.
It also strengthens the Amazing Thailand brand and the ‘Healing Is the New Luxury’ message. Concurrently, the Amazing Thailand x Insta360 collaboration hosted 18 creators from various Asian markets. These included the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand. Their dedicated itinerary across Phuket and Phang-nga ran from 8–12 August.
Industry Collaboration and Future Development
The creators participated in activities aligned with the “Healing Is the New Luxury” theme. This involved guided Thailand Surf Therapy sessions, nature- and community-focused wellness activities, and local cultural engagements. Their content captured these experiences for global audiences.
Both groups converged on 9 August at “The Wave of Healing” Networking Dinner at La Solaya in Khao Lak. TAT’s Tourism Products Department and the TAT Phang-nga Office supported this event. The industry-focused evening facilitated discussions between international participants, TAT executives, tourism operators, wellness partners, and community representatives.
They exchanged perspectives on Thailand Surf Therapy and future tourism product development. Ms. Eurblarp Sriphiromya, Executive Director of TAT’s Tourism Products Department, stated that “Healing Is the New Luxury” reflects a change in traveller values. She noted a preference for meaningful activities that reconnect them with nature, support wellbeing, and create lasting value.
Market-Ready Programmes Emerge
Thailand Surf Therapy incorporates the five-step “Take 5” framework: Energise, Check-in, Breathe in, Play, and Check-out. This framework uses movement, reflection, breathing, recreation, and positive interaction within a structured surf setting. The project has built capacity among facilitators from seven Thai organisations.
These include La Flora Group, La Vita Sana, and Memories Surf House in Phang-nga. Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus; Chanthaburi Surf Tribe; I use my palm in Nonthaburi; and Chann All Soul also participate. These organisations are now extending the initiative through tourism product development, coach networking, learning resources, and further research.
In Khao Lak, partners have developed a five-day, four-night Surf Therapy programme. This combines structured surf sessions with accommodation packages, wellness activities, meals, and nature-based experiences. This demonstrates the concept’s evolution from capacity building into market-ready tourism products for international visitors.
Travellers can expect more structured wellness options in Thailand, with local operators developing specialised surf therapy offerings.
