UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle Plans Kansas City Music Hotel
UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, in partnership with UMH Development LLC, is converting a historic Kansas City building into a 169-room music-themed hotel, drawing on the city's jazz heritage.

Project Announcement and Scope
UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, alongside UMH Development LLC, confirmed plans to convert the historic Scarritt Building in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, into a new music-focused hotel. This adaptive reuse project will transform the landmark property, originally constructed over 117 years ago, into the 169-room UMusic Hotel Kansas City.
The development aims to integrate design, personal service, and programming inspired by the city’s rich musical history, particularly its significant jazz legacy. Construction is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The property will be located adjacent to Kansas City’s Power & Light District and the T-Mobile Center, placing it within a central entertainment and cultural area. Beyond the hotel itself, the development will incorporate a 309-unit branded residential tower, a dedicated music and entertainment venue, a professional recording studio, and a UMusic Shop retail store.
Brand Vision and Amenities
Robert Lavia, CEO of UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, stated that UMusic Hotel Kansas City represents the brand's core mission: transforming historic landmarks into destinations that celebrate music, culture, and community. The company considers Kansas City an appropriate location for its expansion, citing the city's deep musical roots and contributions to jazz.
The amenities planned for the UMusic Hotel Kansas City extend beyond standard hotel offerings. Guests and residents will have access to a luxury spa and fitness centre. The property will also feature multiple food and beverage concepts, including a rooftop restaurant, a lounge, and a pool, enhancing its appeal as a comprehensive lifestyle destination.
This detailed approach demonstrates UMusic Hotels' commitment to providing more than just accommodation, focusing on a culturally specific stay.
UMusic Hotels' Global and US Expansion
UMusic Hotels operates as an innovative hospitality company, partnered with the record label Universal Music Group. Its strategic objective involves blending guest stays, live entertainment, and cultural storytelling within its developments, with UMusic Hotels forming a central part of its portfolio.
The brand launched its inaugural property in Madrid in 2022, a 130-room hotel situated within a historic theatre. Following this, UMusic Hotels has outlined further expansion plans for the United States. These include a property in Austin, Texas, which will comprise 150 rooms and 600 private residences, anchored by the White Rocks Amphitheater.
The Kansas City project is being developed by UMH Development and its partner BR Companies. A specific timeline for the completion of the Kansas City hotel has not yet been released.
Industry Context and Market Trends
The expansion of UMusic Hotels into the US market reflects a broader trend within the travel industry, where consumers increasingly seek unique and culturally specific activities during their stays. This demand has prompted other hospitality groups to pursue similar music-focused developments.
For example, Palm Tree Crew announced plans in 2024 to open a 118-suite music-themed destination in Miami, which subsequently opened in December 2024. Concurrently, Hard Rock International is introducing its Reverb lifestyle brand to Florence, Alabama, with a 155-room, music-themed hotel scheduled for a 2028 opening.
This property forms part of a growing pipeline of Reverb developments across the country. The Kansas City project, therefore, illustrates the industry's ongoing response to evolving consumer preferences for themed accommodations that connect directly with local culture and entertainment. It also highlights the continued viability of adaptive reuse for significant urban properties.
