Regional Growth and Strategic Foundations

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has outlined a substantial five-year expansion strategy for the Asia-Pacific region. Joon Aun Ooi, President, Asia-Pacific, stated the company's regional success stems from mastering hotel franchising. He also cited developing essential guest amenities and maintaining an open approach to operational improvements.

Ooi highlighted the region's dynamic environment, noting an aggregated GDP growth rate of approximately five percent. The travel and tourism industry within Asia-Pacific is forecasted to grow by about four percent. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts reported securing over 500 direct franchise and managed hotel agreements in recent years.

This growth trajectory reflects the region's diverse markets, comprising over 20 different territories at various stages of development. The company aims to tailor its approach to these varied conditions.

Tailored Market Strategies and Brand Leverage

Wyndham's strategy adapts to specific market conditions across Asia-Pacific. For instance, Australia and New Zealand primarily present conversion opportunities. In contrast, Vietnam shows many new hotel construction projects. Singapore, due to land scarcity, focuses more on conversions and asset repositioning. The company's approach relies on several core strengths.

Wyndham is a leader in hotel franchising, a model it has employed for many years in the region. It also leverages 19 of its 25 global brands, spanning from upper-upscale luxury to extended stay options. Furthermore, the "Wyndham Advantage" provides franchisees with sales programmes, loyalty activities, digital marketing, and distribution tools.

This system allows owners to access Wyndham's network to increase revenue. The company’s business philosophy prioritises owner needs.

Evolving Consumer Demand and Owner Models

Addressing consumer demand involves recognising evolving traveller preferences. People now seek specific activities beyond simply visiting attractions. Travel patterns also vary, including immediate and extended family trips, solo travel, or leisure extensions of business travel. Wyndham ensures its offerings remain relevant to every traveller type across diverse source markets.

Eyvonne Lin, Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Performance, Asia Pacific, leads partnerships for the Wyndham Rewards loyalty programme. These collaborations aim to enrich guests' travel activities. Wyndham offers both franchise and management models. The company advocates for the franchise model, considering it more cost-economical for owners.

This model allows owners to operate the hotel while still using the Wyndham Advantage. However, for owners lacking operational proficiency, Wyndham provides management services, prioritising owner preferences over a singular model.

Singapore's Role and Future Outlook

Singapore represents a vital market for Wyndham in Asia-Pacific, serving as a premier global business hub and a connected travel gateway. Wyndham's current portfolio in Singapore caters to various traveller needs. This includes the upscale Wyndham Singapore Hotel for business, leisure, and MICE guests.

Hotel Traveltine Downtown Singapore, Trademark Collection by Wyndham, offers a distinct stay. Days Inn by Wyndham Singapore Novena provides value-driven comfort. Wyndham acknowledges talent acquisition challenges are widespread, not unique to Singapore. While franchisees manage their hiring, Wyndham provides support to ensure service quality and brand integrity.

The company expects to announce new developments in Singapore in the near future. This demonstrates Wyndham’s ongoing commitment to expanding its presence and supporting its network in the region.
