Brunei Targets US$493 Million Tourism Revenue for 2027
Brunei Darussalam aims to attract one million visitors and generate US$493.11 million in tourism revenue during Visit Brunei Year 2027, coinciding with the Sultan's Diamond Jubilee. The nation’s strategy focuses on high-value tourism, encouraging longer stays and greater local spending.

Ambitious Targets for Visit Brunei Year 2027
Brunei Darussalam, recognised as Southeast Asia's second wealthiest nation by GDP per capita after Singapore, has set a target of attracting approximately one million tourists and generating 630 million Brunei dollars (US$493.11 million) in tourism revenue for Visit Brunei Year 2027.
This initiative will coincide with the Diamond Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, marking the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne. Haji Abdul Manaf Metussin, coordinating minister of economic policies and minister of economy, trade and industry, outlined these projections during a Legislative Council meeting.
The minister highlighted that the country's tourism strategy extends beyond merely increasing visitor numbers, prioritising high-value tourism designed to promote extended stays, increased spending, and greater use of local products and services. This approach aims to ensure that tourism revenue circulates within the Bruneian economy, supporting local businesses and communities.
Recent Growth and Strategic Focus on Cruise Travel
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reported a substantial increase in tourist arrivals for the first half of 2026, with approximately 400,000 visitors, representing a 7.8% rise compared to the same period in 2025. This growth follows a positive trend from 2025, which saw a total of 763,375 visitor arrivals, marking a 12.6% increase over 2024 figures.
Notably, sea arrivals demonstrated the strongest growth in the first half of 2026, increasing by nearly 70%. This surge demonstrates the expanding capabilities of Brunei’s cruise tourism sector.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is actively developing tourism in alignment with broader national economic frameworks, specifically the Brunei Economic Blueprint and the Brunei Tourism Industry Roadmap 2024-2035. These documents guide the nation's efforts to diversify its economy and enhance its appeal as an international travel destination.
Driving High-Value Tourism for Economic Retention
Brunei's strategic shift towards high-value tourism is a deliberate policy choice aimed at maximising economic benefit from each visitor. This means encouraging visitors to stay longer, spend more on local goods and services, and engage with the local economy more deeply.
The government’s emphasis on retaining tourism revenue within the country shows a commitment to sustainable economic development through the travel sector.
Visit Brunei Year 2027 is envisioned as a year-long programme of events and activities designed to showcase the nation's cultural heritage, natural attractions, and hospitality, leveraging the significance of the Sultan's Diamond Jubilee.
This approach is intended to attract visitors interested in more than just transit, drawing those who seek immersive cultural visits and contribute significantly to the local economy. The focus on specific market segments, such as cruise passengers, also reveals a targeted approach to expanding visitor demographics.
Implications for Travellers and Industry Stakeholders
For travellers, Brunei’s focus on high-value tourism during Visit Brunei Year 2027 suggests an emphasis on curated experiences that promote longer stays and deeper engagement with local culture and products. This could translate into more developed tour packages, enhanced local artisan markets, and greater availability of authentic Bruneian hospitality services.
Travellers planning a visit in 2027 should anticipate a calendar of events celebrating the Sultan's Diamond Jubilee, potentially offering unique cultural visits. For industry stakeholders, particularly those in hospitality, tour operations, and local retail, this strategy shows a clear direction for investment and development.
Businesses that can cater to visitors seeking extended stays, higher-spending activities, and authentic local products are likely to see increased demand. The significant growth in sea arrivals also highlights an opportunity for cruise lines and related shore excursion providers to expand their operations and offerings in Brunei in the coming years.
