AI Integration Becomes Standard for Chinese Travel Sector

Chinese travel agencies have achieved near-universal adoption of artificial intelligence, according to the latest Chinese Outbound Travel Trade Survey by Dragon Trail Research. Published on July 29, 2026, the report reveals that 99 per cent of agencies now use AI within their operations. This represents a substantial increase from the summer 2025 survey, which recorded 82 per cent adoption. Sienna Parulis-Cook, director of marketing and communications at Dragon Trail International, noted this rapid uptake, highlighting the technology's rapid integration into the sector. The 2026 survey gathered insights from 310 Chinese travel trade professionals who sell outbound travel products, examining current AI applications, its limitations, and areas for future growth.

Widespread Application and Future Growth Expectations

The survey results detail the extent of AI deployment, with 25 per cent of agencies reporting wide adoption across multiple business functions. Another 46 per cent apply AI in specific business areas. The most common applications include travel information collection and management for products such as hotels and flights, alongside translation and multi-lingual support, with half of respondents indicating use in both these categories. Looking ahead, the trend suggests continued expansion: 89 per cent of respondents anticipate their companies will increase AI adoption over the next 12 months, demonstrating a clear commitment to integrating these tools further into their operational frameworks.

Personalisation Ambitions Face Data Privacy Hurdles

While AI adoption is widespread, Chinese travel agencies voice a strong desire to leverage the technology for enhanced personalisation. Over half, 53 per cent of respondents, view personalisation as the area where AI holds the greatest potential to improve their business. However, current use of AI in customer information management remains low, contrasting with this ambition. A significant barrier identified is data security and privacy concerns, cited by 63 per cent of respondents as the biggest challenge to applying AI more extensively to their business. This suggests a need for robust solutions that address these privacy issues before agencies can fully realise their personalisation goals.

Industry Responds to Market Demand for AI Tools

The rapid integration of AI into Chinese travel operations shows a maturing market that prioritises technological efficiency. In response to this demand, Dragon Trail International has introduced new AI tools for B2B marketing over the past year. These include AI-powered support for live events and AI-enhanced travel trade marketing hubs. These developments aim to help clients connect more effectively with the Chinese travel trade and empower agents to continue selling to this robust market. The focus on addressing data privacy concerns will be critical for unlocking further AI capabilities, particularly in customising travel offerings, reinforcing China's position as a tech-forward outbound travel market.
