HKTB Strengthens Western China Travel Links

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) hosted a significant tourism networking conference in Chengdu last Friday. Over 150 media and industry representatives from across Western China attended the event. Participants included tour operators, hospitality leaders, and online travel giants such as Ctrip and Meituan.

Attendees arrived from Sichuan, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces. The HKTB partnered with Hong Kong trade delegates to organise the gathering. Its core purpose was to deepen commercial cooperation among travel operators. It also aimed to encourage increased mainland visitor arrivals to Hong Kong.

HKTB Chairman Peter Lam stated Western China has long served as a vital source market. He expressed optimism that closer trade exchanges will spur creative, high-value travel packages. The conference occurred as part of the wider Hong Kong Week 2026 initiative. This programme is organised by the Hong Kong government in Sichuan province.

Showcasing Campaigns and Key Events

The conference showcased Hong Kong's latest global promotional campaign, "Only in Hong Kong." This initiative highlights the city's dynamic skyline and accessible hiking trails. It also presents historic neighbourhoods and its blend of Eastern and Western cultures. HKTB officials presented bespoke travel itineraries. These aimed to meet diverse traveller preferences.

Promotional efforts strongly emphasised a packed schedule of upcoming flagship events. These are planned for the second half of this year. The lineup features the inaugural International Lantern Spectacular. Other events include Halloween celebrations, the Hong Kong Cyclothon, and the Wine and Dine Festival.

Hong Kong WinterFest and the annual New Year Countdown fireworks are also scheduled. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort delivered a live musical performance. Popular characters and park performers showcased the city's family-friendly entertainment offerings.

Industry Collaboration for Tailored Travel

In conjunction with the promotional showcase, the HKTB staged a targeted business-matching mission. This paired Hong Kong attractions, hotels, and travel agencies with regional buyers. Discussions concentrated on crafting in-depth cultural itineraries. Mega-event packages and family leisure travel were also key topics.

These offerings are tailored specifically for travellers from Western China. HKTB Chairman Peter Lam noted that closer trade exchanges will spur creative, high-value travel packages. He added that tourism authorities will continue collaborating closely with regional partners. This collaboration aims to highlight Hong Kong's distinctive urban appeal.

It also seeks to drive repeat visits from mainland travellers. Tourism officials pledged sustained promotional initiatives. These will run across mainland platforms to support long-term industry growth.

Multi-Destination Strategy and Market Outlook

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law highlighted the complementary strengths of Chengdu and Hong Kong. She revealed significant potential to develop multi-destination itineraries. These would encourage international and mainland travellers. They could explore both cities alongside other mainland destinations. The HKTB’s efforts in Chengdu show a clear strategy.

This focuses on leveraging Western China's outbound travel market. The emphasis on bespoke packages and mega-events aims to attract diverse traveller segments. Industry stakeholders can anticipate new, tailored travel products emerging. These will cater to Western Chinese travellers seeking varied urban and cultural visits.

Continued collaboration and promotional campaigns will likely increase visitor numbers. This supports Hong Kong's tourism recovery and long-term growth initiatives.
