Kazakhstan Partners ATTA, Hosts Events for Tourism Growth

Kazakhstan aims to develop a Central Asian tourism hub by integrating adventure travel with international events. Recent cooperation with the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and a series of major sporting and industry gatherings in Astana and Almaty underscore this strategy. The country seeks to attract international expertise and strengthen its tourism offerings.

Strategic Ambition for Central Asian Tourism

Kazakhstan is actively working to establish itself as a prominent tourism centre within Central Asia, moving beyond merely attracting visitor spending. The country's strategy involves leveraging its geographical attributes, infrastructure, and diverse natural landscapes to create a competitive tourism ecosystem.

This initiative includes fostering international partnerships, enhancing its tourism products, and forging direct connections with foreign travel businesses.

Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports, Miras Tulebayev, stated on August 26, 2026, during the DRV Destination Forum in Astana, that tourists increasingly seek unique engagement with nature, culture, and active routes, areas where Kazakhstan possesses substantial potential.

The nation's efforts extend to collaborating with organisations such as the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and hosting significant international sporting events.

Developing Adventure Travel Offerings

A core element of Kazakhstan's tourism strategy involves the systematic development of its adventure travel sector. The country possesses extensive mountain ranges, a Caspian Sea coastline, steppe landscapes, canyons, and a rich cultural heritage suitable for such travel.

To transform these natural assets into accessible and trustworthy products for international travellers and tour operators, Kazakhstan has partnered with the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

On August 26, 2026, Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports Miras Tulebayev met with ATTA CEO Shannon Stowell in Astana to discuss assessing Kazakhstan's tourism capabilities, guide training, safety protocols, and sustainable travel practices.

Kazakh Tourism and ATTA subsequently signed a memorandum providing for expert evaluations of regional tourism potential, professional development programmes, and familiarisation tours for international partners.

ATTA estimates the global outbound adventure travel market reached $1.16 trillion in 2024, with 67% of international travellers open to travel combining nature, culture, and active participation. Capturing a portion of this market could drive demand in less traditional regions of Kazakhstan.

Leveraging International Events for Exposure

Kazakhstan's tourism development also aligns with its ambition to host major international events, using them as a gateway for global recognition.

Both Astana and Almaty are scheduled to host numerous international sporting and industry gatherings during the autumn of 2026, including world championships, international competitions, and meetings for the World Anti-Doping Agency's governing bodies.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Yerbol Myrzabossynov emphasised that the value of these events extends beyond the competitions themselves. He stated that each event should provide a practical legacy, such as enabling Kazakh athletes to compete at home against top opponents, enhancing specialist qualifications, contributing to infrastructure growth, and promoting event travel.

Kazakhstan plans to host approximately 20 major international competitions at world and continental levels in 2026. Looking ahead, Astana is slated to host six world championships and the 51st UEFA Congress in 2027.

Such events attract athletes, officials, fans, and media, generating demand for accommodation, dining, and transport services, while also providing international visibility for the destination.

Engaging the German Travel Market

Kazakhstan is actively engaging key international markets, with Germany identified as a strategically important source of visitors. Astana hosted the DRV Destination Forum 2026 on August 26, bringing nearly 130 participants to Kazakhstan. This group included 69 representatives from German tour operators, travel agencies, industry associations, and specialised media.

Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports Miras Tulebayev noted sustained growth in tourist flows from Germany and expressed interest in expanding practical cooperation with German travel businesses.

He outlined the objective to move from general promotion of Kazakhstan to the joint development and marketing of specific tourism products, fostering business-to-business connections, and establishing long-term partnerships between companies from both countries.

The DRV, representing over 3,000 German tourism companies responsible for about 90% of organised tourist trips in Germany, estimates that such initiatives could increase German tourist arrivals to Kazakhstan by 25% in 2027, with further annual growth anticipated.

Outlook for Travellers and Industry

Kazakhstan's comprehensive approach to tourism development requires addressing several critical components simultaneously. For adventure travel, this means establishing internationally recognised safety practices, training qualified guides, and ensuring reliable transport, accommodation, and emergency services in remote areas.

For international events, sufficient hotel capacity, transport infrastructure, and suitable venues are essential. From an industry perspective, foreign tour operators require predictable logistics and commercially viable tourism packages that integrate easily into international itineraries.

The recent agreements and event hosting plans demonstrate Kazakhstan's commitment to tackling these elements concurrently.

This strategy suggests that travellers can anticipate more structured and safer adventure travel options in Central Asia, while international tour operators and travel agencies may find new opportunities to develop and market organised tours to a destination actively building its capacity and appeal.
