Switzerland Tourism Redirects India Strategy to Quiet Luxury

Switzerland Tourism is reorienting its marketing for India's affluent travellers, prioritising authenticity and privacy over mass appeal, according to Simon Bosshart. This move, updated on 19 August 2026, reflects a broader industry shift towards sustainable, value-driven visitor engagement and personalised activities.

A Shift Towards Purposeful Travel Marketing

Switzerland Tourism is moving away from traditional destination promotion, adopting a more purposeful approach to attracting luxury travellers.

Simon Bosshart, Chief Markets Officer East at Switzerland Tourism, states that the focus for high-end travel has evolved to prioritise authenticity, privacy, a connection with nature, and meaningful activities, rather than grand spectacles.

This strategic re-evaluation aligns with the organisation's "Travel Better" strategy, which aims to guide tourism towards higher-value, sustainable interactions through targeted marketing efforts and responsible destination management.

This represents a fundamental change from previous broad campaigns, reflecting an industry-wide move towards more nuanced visitor engagement, as observed on 19 August 2026.

From Landmarks to Personalised Storytelling

Bosshart reflects on two decades with Switzerland Tourism, noting the industry's most significant transformation as a shift from promoting places to curating stories for specific audiences.

He recalls that twenty years ago, marketing efforts across Asia concentrated on building basic awareness and showcasing iconic attractions to ensure Switzerland featured on travel itineraries. Today, this approach is insufficient. Travellers now expect destinations to understand their motivations and interests, necessitating tailored experiences.

Switzerland Tourism currently employs "personas" to develop campaigns around specific traveller interests, utilising creators, communities, and digital content ecosystems to communicate its messaging, rather than generic statements about the country's beauty.

India's Evolving Influence on Swiss Tourism

India has emerged as one of Switzerland's most strategically important long-haul markets, according to Bosshart. The country now ranks among Switzerland's top ten global tourism source markets and is one of the top three markets for the Swiss Travel System. Beyond mere arrival figures, Bosshart observes a qualitative change in travel patterns from India.

Despite currency fluctuations and rising travel costs influencing some segments, affluent Indian travellers are increasingly opting for longer stays, slower travel paces, and higher spending on activities rather than simply increasing trip frequency.

Bosshart suggests that improved metrics measuring quality beyond overnight stays would demonstrate a clear movement towards more meaningful travel from India.

Redefining Luxury and Sustainable Growth

For Switzerland Tourism, this shift towards a quieter, more purposeful definition of luxury represents a more sustainable growth model, both economically and strategically. The emphasis is on attracting visitors who contribute greater long-term value and engage more deeply with local communities and activities, rather than pursuing high volume.

This strategy underscores a commitment to sustainability and intelligent personalisation in tourism marketing, moving away from mass campaigns.

The implications suggest that destinations globally may increasingly prioritise visitors who seek authentic engagement and contribute to local economies, influencing how tourism boards develop their future marketing and development plans.
