PATA and Azerbaijan Tourism Board Formalise Asia-Pacific Tourism Push
The new agreement, signed in Baku on 29 October 2026, aims to expand Azerbaijan’s market presence and foster tourism exchange with key nations across the Asia-Pacific region.

New Partnership Targets Asia-Pacific Markets
The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Baku on 29 October 2026, formalising a joint effort to enhance Azerbaijan's visibility within Asia-Pacific travel markets.
The agreement seeks to cultivate new source market opportunities and promote tourism exchange between Azerbaijan and the broader region. PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid and ATB CEO Florian Sengstschmid signed the document, witnessed by PATA Chairman Henry Oh and Fuad Naghiyev, chairman of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Cooperation Framework and Industry Engagement
This partnership establishes a structured framework for cooperation, integrating the ATB's destination promotion and development initiatives with PATA's extensive regional network, industry knowledge, and communication channels.
Through this collaboration, both organisations will work to connect Azerbaijan with travel trade partners, media representatives, and other tourism stakeholders throughout selected Asia-Pacific markets.
PATA Chairman Henry Oh stated that the objective is to link Azerbaijan with key source markets in Asia-Pacific, converting the destination's tourism potential into practical business prospects.
Recent Familiarisation Trip and Summit
Ahead of the MoU signing, PATA and ATB jointly hosted a week-long familiarisation trip for over 50 travel advisors and media professionals. Participants came from six Asia-Pacific markets, including China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore.
The trip showcased prominent Azerbaijani attractions such as Baku's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old City, the Historic Centre of Sheki, Ateshgah Temple, and Yanardag. Delegates also inspected various hotel properties, including The Ritz-Carlton, Baku, and Marxal Resort & SPA Hotel in Sheki.
The programme concluded with the PATA Hosted Buyers Baku 2026 Summit on 29 October, where travel buyers engaged with Azerbaijani tourism suppliers to explore market opportunities and build business relationships.
Future Growth and Asian Market Outlook
The ATB has been a PATA member since 2019 and has actively participated in PATA events, including annual summits in Macao, Istanbul, and South Korea, as well as PATA Travel Mart exhibitions in Bangkok and Kuching.
ATB CEO Florian Sengstschmid indicated that discussions are underway with PATA to host more of its events in Azerbaijan, aiming to bring the PATA community to experience the country first-hand.
This strategic move aims to foster mutual benefits; as Azerbaijan attracts more visitors from Asia-Pacific, improved direct international flight access could also enable Asia-Pacific destinations to welcome more travellers from Azerbaijan.
