All citizens of 85 visa-exempt nationalities must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to travel to the UK. The scheme became mandatory from 25 February 2026; transport operators (airlines, ferries, Eurostar) enforce compliance at boarding. ETA costs £20, valid for two years or until passport expiry (whichever is sooner), permitting multiple short stays of up to six months each. Processing typically takes minutes via the UK ETA mobile app. This represents a significant change from prior visa-free entry; the system replaced historical visa-free access with mandatory electronic pre-authorisation.
Citizens of 62+ visa-exempt countries enjoy visa-free access for up to 90 days within 180 days. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) was planned for Q4 2026 but faces further delays due to issues with the parallel Entry/Exit System (EES). EES is now fully operational at Schengen borders as of 2026, though with queue issues at airports. ETIAS rollout has been postponed; EU-LISA and official sources indicate a likely 2027 launch. Both systems are mandatory but delayed.
